1.5 BlueHDi-EcoBlue-TDCi timing chain problem
The Euro 6.3 (6d) versions of Stellantis' 1.5 BlueHDi engines, produced since January 1, 2020, have been experiencing issues related to the camshaft chain and AdBlue system. Similar problems are present in Ford's DV5-coded 1.5 EcoBlue/TDCi engines produced between 2018 and 2020, which are fundamentally the same.
It's important to note that while this engine uses a timing belt, the issue originates from the camshaft set, specifically the timing chain.
Camshaft Chain Issue
In 1.5 BlueHDi engines produced after 2019, problems have been reported with the 7 mm-wide chain that connects the camshafts, including noise over time and even chain breakage. These engines tend to accumulate unburned soot internally, and when regeneration fails, diesel mixes with the engine oil. As lubrication deteriorates, the chain tensioner loses proper support, causing noise and eventually leading to chain failure.
Symptoms can vary:- Rattling sounds during engine operation
- Failure to restart after stopping (often due to a broken tensioner)
- Sudden chain breakage with a faint 'click' sound while driving
Some drivers encounter these issues as early as 50,000 km, while others report no problems even after 100,000 km.
The most critical moment for wear and risk is during the first start. To address this, Stellantis switched from B71 2312/2302 0w30 oil to 5w30 oil. This new specification replaced the previous one for DV5-coded engines produced before February 2023.
However, the most significant change came in early 2023 (between January and March) when Stellantis updated the chain’s width to 8 mm to solve the problem. As part of this update, the camshafts, tensioner, and camshaft cover (engine top cover) were also revised. The new cover can be identified by its more curved design.

- Ford: Focus 4, Mondeo 4, Fiesta 8
AdBlue Issue
In certain Stellantis diesel vehicles produced between 2014 and 2020, software issues have caused unnecessary engine shutdowns and premature AdBlue tank replacements. Following discussions with consumer authorities in Europe, Stellantis has committed to compensating affected customers.
Solutions and Costs
- Chain Replacement: This is mandatory. Since the updated, thicker chain is incompatible with the old camshaft cover, both need to be replaced together. Currently, the camshaft cover and chain set costs around 150,000 TL.
- Technical Service Bulletin: If your vehicle has a service history, you may be eligible for an update under a 5-year/150,000 km warranty. However, if chain noise isn’t detected, replacement may not be approved even under warranty.
